LAFAYETTE — Just as he did as a freshman, LSU sophomore Rodney Brown opened the outdoor season with a personal best in his discus debut.
He prevailed with a winning mark of 197 feet, 1 inch at the Louisiana Classics meet Saturday at Louisiana-Lafayette.
Brown finished nearly 24 feet clear of the field. The Chappell Hill, Texas, native shattered his previous best of 190-8, posted in his collegiate debut at the Louisiana Classics a season ago. Southeastern Louisiana’s Jeff Milliron was runner-up at 173-5.
LSU swept the discus titles: Sophomore Tori Bliss won the women’s crown with a personal-best throw of 157-2. And LSU freshman Kelsey Carlsen was fourth in the javelin.
Junior Toshika Sylvester sprinted to an easy victory in the women’s 100-meter dash with a wind-aided run of 11.58.
Freshman Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake sprinted to the finish line in a wind-aided 10.40 for second in his first collegiate 100-meter dash, and junior Shermund Allsop was third at 10.48. Southern’s Devin Jenkins took the title in a wind-aided 10.38.
Sophomore Philip Primeaux and freshman Andria Aguilar each added distance titles to LSU’s haul.
Primeaux won the 1,500 meters in 4:00.50, and Aguilar claimed the women’s 800 meters with an outdoor personal best of 2:13.18. Also setting a personal best in her outdoor opener was sophomore Kaitlyn Moreau, who crossed the finish line in 14.14 for a fourth-place finish in the women’s 100-meter hurdles.
MEN BACK HOME VS. MICHIGAN: After playing six of their previous seven matches on the road, the LSU men’s tennis team (6-6) returns to Baton Rouge to face Michigan (5-6) at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Tigers are coming off a 4-3 victory over No. 11 Texas A&M on Friday in College Station, Texas. Admission is free, and free crawfish will be served 45 minutes before the match.
MISSOURI VISIT WOMEN: The women’s tennis team (7-8, 0-5 SEC) hosts Missouri (7-5, 1-4) at 11 a.m. Sunday. The Lady Tigers faced No. 3 Texas A&M on Friday and remained winless in SEC play with a 7-0 loss.
