NEW ORLEANS — The John Besh Foundation’s Chefs Move! Scholarship program is offering two scholarships this year to the culinary school at the International Culinary Center in New York City. Applications are due April 30.
The mission of the program, founded in 2011 by Chef John Besh and Jessica Bride, is to diversify kitchen leadership by providing minority applicants the opportunity to train and become leaders in restaurant kitchens and in their communities.
The program offers fully paid scholarships, which include everything from tuition and housing to knives and transportation.
Each year, recipients are assigned chef mentors from within the Besh Restaurant Group, ensuring that students have the support they need.
The scholarship is open to minority applicants from the New Orleans area with a GED and a year of kitchen experience.
Syrena Johnson, the first recipient of the scholarship, graduated in August; Chris Okorie and Calvin Virgil, the 2012 recipients, are in school now. For more information, visit http://www.chefsmove.org. Applications are due April 30.
