STARKVILLE, Miss. — The No. 12 LSU softball team hit four home runs Sunday en route to a 9-2 Southeastern Conference victory over Mississippi State at the MSU Softball Stadium.
Allison Falcon, Bianka Bell, Sandra Simmons and Tammy Wray all hit home runs for the Tigers (19-5, 2-1).
“We were a completely different team from yesterday,” LSU coach Beth Torina said. “We spent a lot of time thinking about our offensive approach, and coach Dobson really zoned them in.
“The players did a really good job of executing the plan, and hopefully our offense understands now where they need to be. This can be a really good lesson learned for future SEC games.”
LSU scored three runs in the first inning.
A.J. Andrews and Jacee Blades hit consecutive singles, and two batters later, Bell hit a three-run homer over the left-field scoreboard.
“Today was definitely a team win, we knew we had to make things happen at the top of our lineup early in the game,” Bell said. “We had a better plan with our at-bats after seeing their pitcher for 14 innings on Friday. I wanted to take away the inside pitch from her, drive it hard somewhere, and that’s what I did in the first inning.”
In the fourth, Simmons and Wray connected for back-to-back homers. And Falcon’s fourth homer of the season gave LSU an 8-0 lead in the fifth.
Andrews was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Blades was 2-3 with a run and an RBI.
Fico (12-3) earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings while striking out eight.
Allison Owen (9-3) gave up eightruns on seven hits to take the loss for MSU (16-6, 1-2).
Heidi Shape was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Jessica Offutt was 2-for-4 to lead the Bulldogs.
“I’m proud of how our group played all day,” Torina said. “I was happy that we were able to score and continue to score.
“This game was important to the players. They wanted to make sure that we won the series and wanted to have an answer after getting beat the day before.”
LSU hosts Nicholls State at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The game will carried live by Cox Sports Television and on KYPY-FM, 104.9.
