West Baton Rouge Parish residents are getting larger recycling carts this month in a move aimed at encouraging more households to recycle while also cutting solid waste disposal costs, officials said in a news release Friday.
Crews with Allied Waste will start distributing the new 95-gallon carts on March 15, according to the release.
“If you recycle now you’ll get a bin,” Lynn Cline, West Baton Rouge’s public information officer, said Friday. “Two weeks after that, we’ll issue carts to those people who may want to start recycling now.”
Crews will distribute the new carts during their regular recycling routes. After residents’ old bins are emptied, the bins will be picked up and replaced with new carts, the release says.
The new carts, with five times the capacity of the current bins, are blue with green lids and are marked “Recycling Only,” the release states.
The program will cover the unincorporated areas of the parish and the towns of Brusly and Addis.
Cline said the parish services approximately 6,700 households.
Cline said the new carts are being issued at no additional cost to the parish, or residents.
“This is just an effort to keep landfill costs down,” she said.
Recycling service days will remain unchanged until Monday, May 6, when the collection schedule will be adjusted. Those changes will be announced at a later time, the release says.
“We are optimistic that the new and larger recycling cart will greatly increase the number of households recycling and the amount of material being diverted from landfills,” Mary Delapasse, director of Keep West Baton Rouge Beautiful, said in the release.
Delapasse said similar programs in nearby parishes and cities have seen gains of up to 50 percent in participation and materials collected.
Delapasse added the new carts are for recyclable goods only.
“If you put garbage in your recycling cart, it may cause the entire load of recycling to be rejected and the company charged for handling,” she said. “If you need a second garbage cart, contact the parish and you can obtain one for a small charge.”
