MANDEVILLE — Craig Jones is the new football coach at Lakeshore High, replacing Larry Route, who has directed the program since the school opened in 2009.
“We’re a growing school with a bright future,” said Jones 32, who had been the Titans defensive coordinator the past two seasons. “I’m very excited to get this opportunity because we have a lot of quality kids here along with outstanding facilities.”
Jones, a Mandeville High and Southeastern Louisiana graduate, was the defensive coordinator at his prep alma mater before moving to Lakeshore in 2011.
Lakeshore was 5-6 in 2011, its first season competing for district honors and made the Class 4A playoffs. The Titans were 1-8 last year. Lakeshore will remain in 4A for the next two years, but with an enrollment approaching 1,000 could be a 5A school by 2015.
Route, who was the first and still only black man to be a head football coach in St. Tammany Parish since desegregation, is moving to an administrative position at the school.
