Ascension Parish residents have recycled more than 10.5 tons of material at the monthly Recycling Road Show since January, parish officials said.
Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez announced that 2013 first quarter numbers show parish residents are committed to recycling.
“We’ve renewed the yearly contract for 2013 because parish residents have shown they are committed to recycling in Ascension,” Martinez said.
Following the bid process, Baton Rouge company The Recycling Foundation, Inc./Progressive Waste Solutions signed a one-year contract to provide recycling services for the Recycling Road Show, held once a month at the Prairieville Wal-Mart, for $500 per event.
Don Hysell, parish environmental manager, said 2013 first quarter numbers show 4.32 tons of recyclable materials were collected in January, 3.1 tons in February and 3.2 tons in March.
“That’s a lot of material that can be reused in some manner so it doesn’t end up in our dump sites,” Hysell said.
Hysell said 138 parish residents brought recyclables to the Road Show on March 2.
The next Recycling Road Show is set for April 6.
