AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas softball team excelled at the plate and got solid outings from pitchers Blaire Luna and Kim Bruins in a doubleheader sweep of Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday night at Red and Charline McCombs Field.
The Longhorns won the first game 9-4, then won the second game 7-1, giving the Cajuns their first three-game losing streak since April 2011, when they were swept in a three-game series against Florida Atlantic.
The Cajuns took a 2-0 lead in the first game on Matte Haack’s two-run homer, but it was their only lead of the night.
ULL pitcher Christina Hamilton was roughed up in the first inning and left after allowing three runs.
The score was tied at 3 when the Longhorns rallied in the fourth inning, taking a 7-3 lead with two doubles, two singles and a walk. It was just the fourth time this season that the Cajuns have allowed four runs in an inning.
The Cajuns scored once in the ninth off of a Leandra Maly single, but could not spark a rally and fell by a final score of 9-4.
In the second game, Texas took a 2-0 lead on a first-inning home run by Taylor Thom.
After a scoreless second inning, the Longhorns scored at least once run from the third inning on, highlighted by Thom’s sixth-inning homer — her second of the game — to make the score 7-1.
Samantha Walsh gave the Cajuns their lone run with her second homer of the season.
ULL begins Sun Belt Conference play with a doubleheader against Western Kentucky at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lamson Park.
