BAKER — Police arrested a Zachary man accused of beating a woman with a gun and his fists during a domestic dispute last month, Police Chief Mike Knaps said Wednesday.
Livingston Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested Charles Clayton Williams Jr., 36, 15235 Jackson Road, Zachary, on a Baker warrant Tuesday night, Knaps said.
Williams was booked at East Baton Rouge Parish Prison with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery, domestic abuse battery and illegal use of a weapon, the police chief said.
Knaps said officers were dispatched to a Groom Road convenience store on Feb. 25, where they found a woman with visible signs of injuries who said her ex-boyfriend had beaten her.
Police said the woman told them Williams came to her nearby apartment and wanted to talk about their past relationship but became upset and pulled a gun. The woman said Williams struck her with the gun as she tried to flee and during a struggle, the gun fired a shot inside the apartment.
The woman eventually fled after begging for her life, Knaps said.
