TAMPA, Fla. —
Markakis out a few days
DUNEDIN, Fla. — Baltimore Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis said the neck spasms he is having aren’t a concern.
Markakis was scratched from Sunday’s game and said Tuesday morning that he would take his recovery slowly and expected to play in a few days. He missed substantial portions of last season after suffering a broken bone in his hand and a fractured thumb.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said before Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays that he would not play Markakis against Spain on Wednesday. Showalter added that the right fielder could have played had this been the regular season.
JUPITER, Fla. — New York Mets reliever Pedro Feliciano wore a heart monitor while pitching and reported no problems or discomfort during his first spring training outing.
Feliciano threw one inning against the Miami Marlins in a “B” game on a practice field behind Roger Dean Stadium. He allowed one run — on Ben Lasater’s home run — hit a batter and struck out one.
“I think it was better than what I was expecting in my velocity, release,” Feliciano said.
Feliciano was diagnosed last week with a rare genetic condition called left ventricular noncompaction. The condition results from the failure of myocardial development from birth. Feliciano said he never thought about the heart monitor while in the game.
The 36-year-old left-hander, who missed the past two seasons because of a shoulder injury, threw 11 of 18 pitches for strikes. His fastball was clocked by scouts in the low 80 mph range.
JUPITER, Fla. — St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal is getting a second opinion on his ailing elbow.
General manager John Mozeliak said Furcal would be examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews.
The 35-year-old Furcal is out indefinitely after reinjuring the elbow he hurt late last season.
Furcal and the team elected to try rehab rather than reconstructive surgery in the offseason.
The Cardinals also have Pete Kozma, who stepped in last fall as a rookie, and offseason pickup Ronny Cedeno at shortstop.
