New Orleans — New Orleans police are searching for a “person of interest” in the shooting of a police officer during an armed robbery on Saturday morning, and they’ve released a new video of the suspected gunman.
Police released a composite sketch of the man late Tuesday night and then followed that with a video of him walking near a bus stop at the intersection of Poland and St. Claude avenues. The video came from a security camera on a building in the area, said Remi Braden, a police spokeswoman.
That bus stop is only a few yards from where Officer John Passaro, 41, was shot Saturday morning while responding to a report of an armed robbery at a Dollar General in the 1100 block of Poland.
Police said Passaro was ambushed by a gunman who was holding several customers and employees of the business in a back office.
Passaro was shot multiple times and remains in intensive care. Police have been searching for clues on the suspect, who was last seen fleeing toward downtown New Orleans after the shooting.
The grainy video shows a man fitting the general description of the gunman walking down a sidewalk. The man’s face is not clear.
Braden said police are hoping someone may see the way the man carries himself on the video and have a memory jogged.
Crime Stoppers has offered a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and indictment in the case.
Braden said earlier this week that Passaro was in good spirits and recovering from the incident.
Police have said Passaro was shot while he stood outside of the office after entering the store and finding it apparently deserted.
Police believe the gunman fired three times, and Passaro was struck twice. Police searched the area for hours with SWAT team members and canine units but could not find the suspect.
The man is described as being in his mid- to late 30s, about 5 foot 7 inches tall with a slim build. During the incident, he was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a bandanna over his face with sunglasses. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers at (504) 822-1111.
