The October 2010 issue of Weatherwise Magazine featured an article on hail accumulations. It noted storms producing deep hail are rare. The latest episode of what experts term “deep hail” occurred in Idalia, Colo., on April 29, 2012.
Late in the evening, a fierce hailstorm deposited 7 inches of hail near this small town 11 miles west of the Colorado-Kansas border. The storm, also plotted 32 miles north of Interstate 70, stranded motorists on U.S. 36, west of Idalia, who were awaiting rescue by snow plows.
The February issue of Weatherwise Magazine noted the ground remained covered and white with hail for several days despite sunshine and temperatures in the low 80s. Most stones ranged from 1/4 to 3/4 of an inch.
