COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 24 LSU men’s tennis team ended its first doubleheader of the season with a 6-1 victory against Wright State (6-6) on Sunday at Ohio State’s Varsity Tennis Center.
LSU opened the day with a 7-0 loss to the host school, No. 4 Ohio State.
LSU (5-2) won the doubles point against Wright State to take a 1-0 lead: Olivier Borsos and Boris Arias defeated Ricardo Pineda and Evan Neuman 8-2.
LSU’s Roger Anderson and Tam Trinh clinched the doubles point for the Tigers on court one with an 8-5 win over Jamison Clark and Hayden Joblin.
LSU dominated the singles matches. On court six, Arias defeated Myles Harris 6-1, 6-1 to push the Tigers’ lead to 2-0. Borsos extended the lead when he bested Pineda 6-4, 6-2.
LSU freshman Harrison Kennedy came through with a win on court five over Clark 7-5, 6-2 to clinch the match.
The Tigers open SEC play Friday at Vanderbilt.
SITTING FOURTH IN FLORIDA: In Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., junior Andrew Presley opened the John Hayt Invitational by firing a 3-under-par 69 to help LSU to fourth after the opening round at Sawgrass Country Club.
Presley carded four birdies and one bogey on his round as he finished in a tie for sixth.Sophomore Curtis Thompson fired a 1-under 71 to tie for 17th to help LSU post a 2-over 290.
Tournament host North Florida fired a 12-under 276 to grab a six-stroke lead on Duke in the team standings.
SEASON OPENS AT SUGAR BOWL INTERCOLLEGIATE: In New Orleans, the women opened the spring with a round of 3-over 291 in the first round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at English Turn Golf and Country Club.
The Lady Tigers (290) are eighth in the 18-team field. Tulane leads after posting a 6-under 282, one shot ahead of Duke and UCLA.
Freshman Elise Bradley posted the best opening round of the day for LSU with a 1-under 71.
The three-day event continues at 9 a.m. Monday.
