PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — The No. 11 LSU softball team had its 10-game winning streak come to a close and was handed a 2-0 defeat by No. 16 UCLA Sunday on the final day of the Mary Nutter Classic held at the Big League Dreams Complex.
The Tigers (14-2) were shutout for the first time on the season despite holding a 7-3 advantage in hits over UCLA (12-1). Rikki Alcaraz and Simone Heyward both went 2-for-3 for LSU.
Rachele Fico (9-1) took the loss, allowed two runs on three hits in six innings while striking out nine.
UCLA put two runners on to start the second inning. Alyssa Tiumalu was hit-by-a-pitch, and Mysha Sataraka doubled down the left field line. Brittany Moeai hit a slow-rolling single that squibbed past Fico’s glove and deflected over a diving Bianka Bell at shortstop to bring both runners home.
“They were able to get a couple of breaks, and we didn’t throughout the game,” Torina said. “For the most part, Rachele was able to get them off balanced. I think it showed that we threw her four days in a row. She was still able to strike out nine batters and is going to be the one in the circle we’re going to count in throughout the season.”
The 10-game winning streak for LSU was the second-longest in Beth Torina’s time at LSU. The Tigers had a 12-game run from March 16-April 4 last season.
UCLA’s Paige McDuffee (4-0) gave up seven hits in seven innings, striking out two and walking none.
ULL 9, James Madison 1: In Clearwater, Fla., Shellie Landry homered in her first at-bat and her last at-bat en route to a 3-for-3 day with two home runs and four RBIs to help lead Louisiana-Lafayette to the NFC Lead Off Title.
Landry was named to the all-tournament team, along with teammate Brianna Cherry.
Landry’s first home run came in the second inning after a double by Matte Haack. Landry’s fifth-inning homer came after an RBI double by Nerissa Myers and an RBI single by Cherry.
Jordan Wallace (8-1) allowed four hits in six innings.
