Mardi Gras in Baton Rouge shuts down on the Saturday before Fat Tuesday. Not so in neighboring Lafayette, where the parties and parades continue until midnight brings the beginning of Ash Wednesday and Lent.
The Krewe of Gabriel fêted its king and queen with a pair of luncheons beginning Feb. 10. The royals also presented their maids and dukes with gifts at this time.
Harold Domingue, commodore of the Krewe of Gabriel, was the official host when the krewe honored King Gabriel LXXIV Stuart Clark IV at the traditional king’s luncheon at the Cajundome Convention Center.
Seated at the royal table with the king were Queen Evangeline LXXIV Jasmine Abdalla with her escort, Andrew Mahtook, and her mother, Elizabeth Abdalla. Also at the table was the king’s wife, Ann, and their children Kathryn Sintz with husband Nicholas; Elizabeth Gilbert with husband Patrick, and Dr. Stuart Clark V with wife Camille; Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association President Bill Johnson and wife Chris; Ladies Committee chairwoman Mimi Francez and husband Robert; and Monsignor Keith DeRouen.
Also attending were 2013 royal maids and dukes Elizabeth Adley, Margaret and Robert Billeaud, Emily Mann, Jacqueline Foreman, Kate and Robert Eddy, Elyse and Jay Faugot, Ryan Gambel, Diane Gremillion, Emily and Mark Lerille, Amanda and Bruce Montesano, Maggie and Chuck Mouton and Grace and Jerry Reaux, Peter Piccione, Matt Galloway, Richard Kennedy, Brian Patton and John Quoyeser.
The following day, Queen Evangeline LXXIV and her mother hosted a luncheon honoring her royal maids at the Petroleum Club. Ann Clark brought greetings and a gift on behalf of her husband, Stuart Clark IV; last year’s queen, Madison Montgomery, also came bearing gifts.
Carnival flags were presented to Abdalla and Ann Clark, who received the flag in her husband’s name, by Chris Johnson on behalf of Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association. The flags were flown for the first time on Mardi Gras Day, marking the beginning of the reigns of the 73rd Gabriel and Evangeline.
The Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge honored alumni from schools throughout the diocese at its annual Distinguished Graduate Awards Dinner Jan. 28 at the Renaissance Hotel. The awards were presented by Bishop Robert Muench, Superintendent Melanie Verges and Assistant Superintendent Joseph Scimeca.
