MERIDIAN, Miss. — The Baton Rouge Community College men’s basketball team improved to 5-1 in Miss-Lou Conference play with a 71-57 win over Meridian Community College on Wednesday night.
Troy Anthony and Jeffrey Walker scored 12 points apiece to pace BRCC’s balanced attack. Morris Wright and Deshawn Washington added 11 points each. Wright had five assists and Washington six.
Nick Waters led Meridian CC (0-6 in Miss-Lou) with 15 points.
Walker’s efforts last week earned him National Junior College Athletic Association player of the week.
SOUTHERN MISS 71, TULANE 60: In Hattiesburg, Miss., Tulane overcame a 16-point deficit to regain a lead only to fall to Southern Miss.
Tulane (16-9, 4-6 Conference USA) trailed 44-28 with 14:03 remaining in the second half and rattled off 14 straight points to tie the game with 9:26 left. Jordan Callahan, Ben Cherry and Ricky Tarrant drained back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers during the run.
The Green Wave eventually regained the lead 47-46 with 8:46 left and then led again 55-53 with 5:17 left, but USM (19-6, 8-2 C-USA) closed the game by scoring 18 of the last 23 points.
Josh Davis led Tulane with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his 14th double double of the season. Cherry finished with a career-high 17 points on five-of-five from 3-point range. Callahan and Tarrant each added eight points.
FRANKLIN HONORED: In New Orleans, Xavier women’s basketball standout SiMon Franklin won her second Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her play last week.
Franklin, a 5-foot-7 senior guard from St. Joseph’s Academy, won the award after averaging 15 points, three rebounds and four steals and shooting 57.9 percent from the floor during the Gold Nuggets’ 2-0 week.
Franklin scored 22 points, her second 20-point game in Xavier’s 61-53 victory Saturday at Philander Smith.
