A rare opportunity to view the site of a May 1863 battle between black Federal troops and Confederate defenders of Port Hudson will be offered Saturday to visitors at Port Hudson State Historic Site, on U.S. 61 just inside East Feliciana Parish.
Union Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks sent the 1st and 3rd Louisiana Native Guard regiments against one of the strongest points in the Confederate fortress. Although the results were disastrous for the black troops, their courage in the face of overwhelming odds demonstrated the black soldiers’ willingness to fight for the Union, historians say.
The guided tour will begin at 10 a.m. at the site’s museum for an audio-visual presentation and viewing of a battle diorama. Participants will drive to the site’s back gate for a walk to the battle site. Wearing shoes suited for muddy conditions is recommended.
