A vehicle hit a child who was crossing the road in front of Freshwater Elementary School on Monday evening, a Denham Springs police spokesman said.

The child was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, Cpl. Shawn Perkins said.

The child, who was walking with a parent and other
children, was crossing Cockerham Road sometime before 6 p.m. when he was hit, Perkins said.

The area was dark when the crash occurred, Perkins said.

Perkins said details are still sketchy, including the child’s age and sex and whether the child is a student at Freshwater Elementary School.

The driver of the vehicle
that struck the child stopped after the accident, Perkins said.
