SLIDELL As we close in on Valentine’s Day, consider giving the gift of life by donating blood. Every minute of every day, someone somewhere is in need of blood.

In Slidell, there is a specific need this month for Allen Little, a lifelong Slidell resident who is well-known for many reasons: He is captain of the Krewe of Perseus, a longtime member of the Slidell Little Theater and the owner of Chateau Bleu Caterers with his wife, Kathy Little.

Allen Little will be undergoing a kidney transplant in April, and he and his wife are putting out a call for blood donations throughout the month of February, particularly type O blood.

There is a living donor match for the transplant, which greatly decreases chances of a rejection, but blood transfusions may be needed after the transplant while Little’s body is accepting the kidney, according to Suzy Potter, of The Blood Center.

Blood transfusions will enable his blood count to remain elevated so his immune system does not become compromised.

Little’s family has a genetic kidney disease, sometimes known as Bright’s disease, and in recent years he has relied on dialysis.

To prepare for his transplant, Little has lost 150 pounds.

The blood drive will take place throughout the month of February.

Donations can be made at The Blood Center’s Slidell Donor Center, 1337 Gause Blvd., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays; from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays; from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays; and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. The center’s phone number is (985) 641-4400.
