Neighbors Notes for Feb. 5, 2013

Academic

LSU TEAM PLACES FIFTH: The LSU Law Center’s Arbitration Team of Andrew Baer, Zachary Ferguson, Michael Laborde and Linda Matta placed fifth at the ABA Arbitration Competition’s national championship on Jan. 25 in Chicago.

Coached by Jim Carver, the team advanced to the national championship after winning a regional round in November, beating last year’s national champion, Texas Tech University School of Law.

One of four practical skills competitions sponsored by the American Bar Association, the arbitration competition promotes greater knowledge of alternative dispute resolution by simulating a realistic arbitration hearing. Participants prepare and present an arbitration case, including opening statements, witness examinations, exhibit introductions, evidentiary presentations and summations to a panel of experienced arbitrators. This year’s case file dealt with a medical malpractice dispute.
