NEW ORLEANS — A fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man in Algiers at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday prompted officials at a nearby school to place the school on lockdown, New Orleans police said.
Police found the victim, whose identity is being withheld pending the notification of family members, in a four-door black Toyota Avalon at the intersection of Belleville and Slidell streets, Officer Garry Flot said in a news release.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Flot said.
Police did not know how the long the lockdown was in effect at the school, which was out for the day, but had after-school programs going on, Flot said.
Police believe the shooting occurred at the intersection of Belleville and Opelousas streets and the victim drove to the intersection of Belleville and Slidell before collapsing, Flot said.
Police are looking for a silver or gray four-door Pontiac Grand Prix that was seen leaving the scene, Flot said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (504) 822-1111 or toll-free 1 (877) 903-7867.
