Zulu ball celebrates ‘love, peace and harmony’

The Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club Inc. held its annual coronation ball on Friday at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The ball featured the crowning of Cedric Givens, King Zulu 2013, and Monica Veal Givens, Queen Zulu 2013.

“Zulu, Together With Love, Peace and Harmony,” was the theme of this year’s ball. Andrew “Pete” Sanchez Jr., chairman of Carnival activities, and Dennis Robertson, chairman of coronation, served as coordinators of the coronation. Clarence A. Becknell Sr., Zulu historian emeritus, served as the official master of ceremonies for the ball.

Naaman C. Stewart, president of Zulu, gave the welcome address to members, visitors and guests.

The 2013 royal court of Zulu became official as Elroy A. James, King Zulu 2012, crowned Cedric Givens, King Zulu 2013.

Dr. Tanyanika Phillips, Queen Zulu 2012, crowned Monica Veal Givens, Queen Zulu 2013.

The royal court of King Zulu 2013 included Kevin Comeaux and Irvin Scales Jr., King’s Charge D’Affaires; Darren Johnson and Marshall Sanford, King’s Warriors; Tyler Allen Lee, Junior Warrior; Ryan Anthony Williams, Crown Prince; and a host of dukes and aides to assist King Zulu 2013.

The royal court of Queen Zulu 2013 included Christopher Cage and Fred Lee Jr., Charge D’Affaires; Glenn Givens and Ralph Sullivan, Queen’s Warriors; Rayna Latrice Brantley, Crown Princess and Deanna Daggs, Imperial Princess.

The queen’s attendants were Nicole Jackson, Jeanna Lee, Christina Price, Andrea Scales and Jeannie West.

As King and Queen Zulu 2013 were escorted to their thrones, the 2013 Zulu Maids were in place to be presented by Dr. John Foster and Armand Richards.

The 2013 Zulu maids were Kassidy J. Christmas, daughter of Mr. Karl Christmas and Ms. Kimberly Green; Des’rae E.L. Davis, daughter of Mr. Desmond S. Davis Sr. and Mrs. Cheryl M. Ferrell; Gabrielle M. Francois, daughter of Marlon Francois and Kimberly Gilmore Francois; and Kandice A. Gaines, daughter of Deon Gaines and Cheryl Hunter.

Also, Shireon D. Gray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Trevigne; Jada M. Green, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Green; Shaude C. Henry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Henry; Loreal A. Ivory, daughter of Leo Ivory III and Shena Jones; and Alexis C. Jackson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Jackson;
