Going to the girls soccer playoffs is nothing new for Baton Rouge High soccer coach Shelia Achee. The Bulldogs have been to the playoffs in each of Achee’s 23 seasons and just wrapped up their 18th district title during her tenure.
A chance to reach another milestone hasn’t detered Achee’s focus on Thursday’s Division I bidistrict playoff game. BRHS hosts Bossier City-based Parkway at 5 p.m. with a berth in the regional round and the chance to give Achee her 400th career win at stake.
“Without a doubt, the most important thing is advancing to the next round,” Achee said. “The other stuff is nice, but moving on to the regionals is what I want more than anything.”
Achee, a 1982 BRHS graduate, has a record of 399-97-31 going into the playoff opener. The Bulldogs are a No. 9 playoff seed and claimed a 2-1 win over No. 24 Parkway in a Mandeville-based tournament early in the season.
“It’s been fun to go back through the old (newspaper) clippings and see what the other teams accomplished,” Achee said.
“I’ve got young team with a lot of freshmen, so it’s been like having the best of both worlds. “This is really about the kids. ... They made all the wins happen. I just direct all the traffic out there.”
A win could put BRHS in a regional showdown with Mandeville, whose coach Sean Esker recently picked up his 400th win. Calvary Baptist’s Shelley McMillan is the only other Louisiana girls coach with 400 wins. Like Esker, McMillan’s wins have come at more than one school. Achee would become the first coach to compile 400 wins at one school.
Still, Achee wants the Bulldogs focused only on Parkway.
“All I want them (BRHS players) thinking about is Parkway,” Achee said.
Walker High made history by making the girls soccer playoffs for the first time in school history.
The Wildcats, seeded 27th, play No. 6 Dominican at 4 p.m. Friday at New Orleans’ Pan American Stadium.
WHS is one of two Livingston Parish teams to make the girls playoffs. Live Oak High is scheduled to play Mandeville Friday at either 3 p.m. at MHS or at 7 p.m. at Lakeshore High.
Division III University High is the only other team to report a Thursday game time. The Cubs will host Evangel Christian at 5 p.m.
St. Joseph’s Academy, East Ascension and Dutchtown were other Baton Rouge Division I teams to announce Friday playoff game times.
SJA will host St. Amant at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Burbank Soccer Complex Field No. 4.
East Ascension and Dutchtown are set to host 6 p.m. Friday contests. EAHS will host Sulphur, while Dutchtown will host Barbe-Lake Charles.
In Division II, St. Michael the Archangel also is set to play at 6 p.m. Friday. The Warriors host Cabrini-New Orleans at Burbank No. 4.
In Division III, Episcopal hosts Alexandria’s Grace Christian at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Runnels got a jump on the Division III girls soccer field with a 5-0 victory over Christian Life in a bidistrict playoff game Wednesday.
Rahliat Animashaun scored four goals for Runnels, and Sadie Kraft scored the other goal. Christian Life goalkeeper Mary Davis had 11 saves, and Runnels’ Sami Roberson had two.
