A Baton Rouge man arrested 21 times during the past 19 years and who is now accused in the Jan. 12 shooting death of a man in Sorrento has surrendered to authorities, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday.
Calvin K. “Dirt” Williams, 37, 8539 Longwood View Ave., was taken into custody at the U.S. Marshals Service offices in Baton Rouge on Sunday, Ascension Sheriff Jeff Wiley said in a news release.
Williams and Cecil Beals are accused in the slaying of Gerald “Butta” Wilkins, 1123 N. Sabine Drive, Baton Rouge, Wiley said.
Detectives booked Beals, 53, 9429 Avis Ave., Baton Rouge, into the Ascension Parish Jail on Jan. 18 on one count of second-degree murder, Wiley has said. At the time of his arrest, Beals was held in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for failing to appear in court to answer a traffic violation.
Wilkins was found dead on the side of the LV Road in what appeared to be an “execution-style slaying,” Wiley said.
Wilkins, Beals and Williams drove from Baton Rouge to Sorrento, bought gasoline, then drove to LV Road, where Beals and Williams allegedly killed Wilkins, Wiley said.
Beals and Williams made several calls to a man who lives on Panama Road, near LV Road, around the time of the shooting, Wiley said.
The motive for the killing is unclear, but the men were “obviously involved in the illegal drug trade” and all “have extensive criminal records,” Wiley said.
Williams is a convicted felon who has been arrested 21 times since 1993, Wiley said. However, the sheriff did not say what the outcomes of those arrests were.
The arrests include one in 2006 on a count of attempted second-degree murder, and in 2007 on one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder, Wiley said.
Williams also had prior arrests on counts of robbery, armed robbery and drug-related incidents, Wiley said.
The investigation is ongoing and there may be additional arrests, Wiley said.
