It was truly a dog day afternoon in New Orleans when the Krewe of Barkus took to the streets of the French Quarter on Sunday for its annual parade.

Just like P.D. Eastman wrote in his popular children’s book, there were big dogs, little dogs, white dogs and black dogs and each one of them was all dressed up for the biggest dog in party town.

His Royal Highness King Jacque Miller Wallis reigned alongside beautiful Queen Hattie as the doggie duo led their canine entourage on a royal ride with all the trimmings.

Of course there was a police escort and a brass band to lead the way as crowds lined the streets to witness this popular and creative spectacle.

This year’s theme, “Tails & Tiaras — Here Comes Honey Bow Wow,” said it all. As the four-legged costumed clan arrived at the parade’s reviewing stand, WWL’s Angela Hill and WDSU’s Margaret Orr provided colorful, detailed descriptions of each float for the crowd of cheering fans assembled to enjoy the celebration of man’s best friend.

The parade’s founder, Thomas Wood, was on hand along with his pup Jo Jo, who led the parade as the krewe’s captain this year.

Easily one of the best carnival events of the year, this is a parade not to missed and one that I truly look forward to each and every year. Visit www.barkus.org for all the D-tails!
