FORT WORTH, Texas — For the first time since 2010, the LSU gymnastics team eclipsed the 197-point mark in a meet as the Tigers finished second at the Metroplex Challenge with a 197.100 on Saturday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
No. 2 Oklahoma won the meet with a 197.275, while No. 7 LSU was second at 197.100, No. 16 Oregon State was third at 196.825, No. 9 Georgia was fourth at 196.775 and Washington finished last at 194.875.
For LSU (5-2), the 197.100 marked the Tigers’ first team total of 197 or higher since March 12, 2010 when LSU defeated Iowa 197.150-195.400 in Baton Rouge.
“We talked to the kids about taking the ‘tense’ out of intensity and just going out and having a great night tonight, and they did that,” LSU coach D-D Breaux said. “We got a little tight on beam. That ultimately cost us first place, but when you compete against and beat some great teams like we did tonight and you finish with a 197, it is something we can build upon. We look forward to going in to practice this week and getting better.”
LSU posted scores of 49.500 on vault, 49.450 on bars, 48.750 on beam and 49.400 on floor to finish with the 197.100.
The 49.500 on vault is LSU’s highest team total in the event since the Tigers scored a 49.625 at the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge on April 12, 2008. The 49.450 on bars is the team’s best score in the event since Feb. 20, 2009 when the Tigers scored a 49.500 in a home tri-meet against North Carolina and Illinois-Chicago.
Rheagan Courville tied with Oklahoma’s Taylor Spears for the all-around title with a 39.450. She also tied for the bars title with Georgia’s Chelsea Davis as Courville set a career-high with a 9.95.
Sarie Morrison captured her second vault title of the season with a career-high tying 9.925, while Courville, Randi Lau and Maliah Mathis all tied for second with a 9.90. Courville, Mathis and Jessica Savona placed second on floor with 9.90s.
