The New Orleans Saints will consider former NFL head coaches Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini for their defensive staff, according to an ESPN report.

Citing league sources, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Crennel, fired last month by the Kansas City Chiefs, and Mangini, who formerly was head coach of the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns, are being eyed for openings on the Saints’ defensive staff.

Crennel and Mangini, who both coach the 3-4 base defense that Saints coach Sean Payton said the team will switch to after firing defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on Thursday, could both be targeted by Payton.

Crennel and Mangini were on the same New England Patriots’ coaching staff when they won three Super Bowl titles with Crennel serving as defensive coordinator and Mangini coaching defensive backs.

The Saints also need a secondary coach after Payton fired Ken Flajole on Thursday as well.
