BREC may extend contract

The East Baton Rouge Parish Recreation and Park Commission will consider extending the contract of Superintendent Carolyn McKnight one or
two years, Commission Chairman Kenneth Riche said Thursday.

McKnight is completing the first year of her two-year contract.

The extension will prevent BREC from having to possibly renew McKnight’s contract in 2014, when 6 mills of dedicated property tax will go before the voters for renewal.

“I don’t think it’s very prudent that we be looking for a superintendent at that point,” Riche said.

The extension would not include a raise in McKnight’s $150,000-per-year salary, Riche said.

“We are not talking about any monetary difference,” he said. “We need to iron out a couple of small differences, in terms of retirement plan.”

Riche said he will recommend the commission discuss the matter behind closed doors at its February meeting.
