ROBINSON RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP: Bethany Robinson, of Baton Rouge, a junior electrical engineering major at Howard University, has been named winner of the H.O.P.E. Scholarship Initiative’s second annual 140 Twitter Challenge.
The 140 Twitter Challenge is a scholarship competition designed to meet students on social media. Students respond to a question provided by HOPE on Twitter in 140 characters or less and the best response is awarded a $140 scholarship.
Robinson’s winning response to the question “What are you currently doing to make your world, university or neighborhood a better place?” was, “I mentor and teach in a middle school STEM classroom encouraging kids to do well in math and science and pursue majors in STEM.”
Robinson is an in-class intern at the Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science. The class teaches core STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curriculum.
She is the daughter of Terry and Samantha Robinson, of Baton Rouge.
HART RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP: Nathan Hart, a graduate of Baton Rouge Magnet High School, is a recipient of the Haudenosaunee Nations Scholarship at the University of Rochester.
The scholarship provides full tuition grant aid for admitted members of the Haudenosaunee: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca or Tuscarora. Hart, a freshman and the son of Holly Hart and Dr. Craig Hart, is a resident of Baton Rouge.
TERNDRUP RECEIVES LEADERSHIP AWARD: Christopher Terndrup, a student at Tulane University School of Medicine, has been named a recipient of the American Medical Association Foundation’s 2013 Leadership Award. This award provides medical students, residents/fellows and early career physicians from around the country with special training to develop their skills as future leaders in organized medicine and community affairs.
Terndrup is a fourth-year medical student pursuing a residency in internal medicine. At Tulane he held numerous leadership positions over community service and advocacy projects, from creating the Interpretive Services Project to organizing the school’s first annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Health Week.
KING GRADUATES FROM TEST PILOT SCHOOL: Air Force Capt. Bradley King graduated from USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., on Dec. 8.
King, a Baton Rouge native, is a 2000 graduate of Parkview Baptist High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from LSU and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Tennessee. His graduation from Test Pilot School carries a master’s degree in flight test engineering.
King has been assigned to the 586th Flight Test Squadron at Holloman AFB, N.M. He is the son of William and Pam King, of Baton Rouge, and the grandson of Keith and Melva Burchfield, of Baton Rouge.
SWAN COMPLETES BASIC: Pfc. Eric J. Swan graduated from recruit training on Dec. 7 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is the son of Anthony and Donna Swan, of Gonzales, and is a 2012 graduate of St. Amant High School.
