A rifle accidentally discharged early Saturday morning, killing an 18-year-old Denham Springs man while he was at a house on Main Street, a Baton Rouge police spokesman said.
Trevon Wilson, 8639 Forrest Delatte Road, died at a hospital from a single gunshot wound to the chest, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said in a news release.
The rifle went off when five to six people in the house were examining it at 2:09 a.m., McKneely said.
This incident is still under investigation and no arrests have been made, McKneely said.
The house appeared abandoned Sunday afternoon.
Allen Holland, 64, who lives across the street from the 2645 Main St., home, said the house has been vacant ever since its resident, whom Holland could only identify as “Chip,” died about five months ago.
Holland said the man had lived in the house for about three years.
Holland said he has seen people, likely some of the man’s family members, coming in and out of the house since his death.
Holland said the house is one of several vacant homes in the area.
“That’s when the trouble comes up,” Holland said of vacant houses.
Holland said he was asleep when the shooting happened.
