A 72-year-old Livonia resident was killed in a single-vehicle wreck early Saturday on La. 1, south of La. 78 in Pointe Coupee Parish, a State Police spokesman said.
Troopers believe Willet Jarreau Jr. was driving north on La. 1 shortly before 4:30 a.m. when his 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee ran off the road to the left at a right-hand curve, struck an embankment and went airborne before landing on the passenger’s side, Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer said in a news release.
Jarreau, who was not wearing a seat belt, received fatal injuries, Sandifer said.
The State Crime Lab will perform a toxicology analysis on a blood sample taken from Jarreau. Investigators were uncertain Saturday whether or not Jarreau was impaired, Sandifer said.
