PLAQUEMINE — The Iberville Parish Council kicked off its 2013 sessions Tuesday night by re-electing Matthew H. Jewell as chairman and Warren “T-Notchie” Taylor as vice chairman as well as hearing briefings from the parish administrator and a Chamber of Commerce official.
Both Jewell and Taylor were unopposed and re-elected with unanimous votes.
Parish President J. Mitchell Ourso Jr. was not present because he was recovering from minor surgery on a hand, Jewell announced.
Problems with sewer pipes and air conditioning have hampered completion of the North Iberville Community Center in Rosedale, reported Parish Administrator Edward “Lucky” Songy, but the project is due for completion in the next five to six weeks and then a grand opening will be scheduled.
The seemingly endless rain has caused some minor flooding around the parish, Songy said, and several houses in St. Gabriel were flooded after 10 inches to 14 inches of rain fell there in the past week or so. Sandbags are available at fire stations around the parish.
The Welcome Center at Grosse Tete recorded 23,714 visitors in 2012 from 40 states and 13 foreign nations, Songy told the council.
Hank Grace, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, told the council that the new year was also starting off well in regard to economic development, adding that two major projects, which he could not yet go into detail about, are in the works for the St. Gabriel area.
Project “Ike,” he said, involves the potential development of about 700 acres, and project “Sam” would involve possibly developing 1,000 acres.
“Both projects are in excess of $500 million,” Grace said, promising to make further disclosures as soon as possible.
Other matters coming before the council included:
ABANDONMENT HEARING: The council set a public hearing for its Feb. 18 meeting on the proposed formal abandonment of Dunn Street, Folse Street and Taylor Lane, which would allow the property to revert to its surrounding private property, Songy said.
The nine homes, some of which are rented and others are vacant, will remain on the 911 maps for emergency services, if needed.
