Assistant coach joins LSU tennis staff

The LSU women’s tennis team welcomes former Director of Coaching and Player Development for the Qatar Tennis Federation, Amine Boustani, as the program’s assistant coach.

Before going to Qatar, Boustani served one year as the associate head coach at Virginia Commonwealth, leading the the women’s team to an 18-9 record and the Colonial Athletic Association conference final in 2009. He spent 14 years at Drury University, posting a 271-62 record.

LSU gymnastics TV show to debut

“Inside LSU Gymnastics with D-D Breaux” will debut at 4 p.m. Wednesday on Comcast Sports South. It will also be shown at 4:30 p.m. Thursdays on Cox Sports Television and 10 p.m. Thursdays on KZUP channel 19 in the Baton Rouge area.

The show will provide highlights, interviews, features and previews.

LSU-Eunice baseball coach honored

LSU Eunice baseball coach Jeff Willis was recently named both a Regional Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Willis was named the NJCAA Division II Regional Coach of the Year for the South District before receiving the National Coach of the Year honors at the 2013 ABCA Convention on Jan. 3-6 in Chicago.

Willis led the Bengals to their fourth NJCAA National Championship in 2012, compiling a 57-5 record. In his 11 seasons, LSU Eunice teams have a combined 480-125 record.

top 101 stadiums

Alex Box Stadium is listed among the Top 101 stadium experiences in the United States for 2012 by Stadium Journey magazine.

Alex Box Stadium ranked No. 70 on Stadium Journey’s Top 101 experiences over the past year. The four-year-old venue is the only college baseball stadium to make the list.

The magazine’s staff visited 1,225 different stadiums in 2012. The ranking takes into account the food and beverage at the stadium, overall atmosphere, the neighborhood in which it resides, the fans, access outside and inside the stadium, return on investment, and allows room for “bonus points” for unique features.

Nicholls season tickets on sale

THIBODAUX — Season tickets for the Nicholls State baseball season are on sale through the Nicholls ticket office.

The Colonels will have 24 games at Ray E. Didier Field, hosting Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane and Southern University, with a three-game series against new opponents in Towson and Sacred Heart, among others.

Fans will have options for 20, 35 or 75 tickets. Plans begin at $96 for 20 tickets.

Three Tulane tennis players in top 20

NEW ORLEANS — The 55th-ranked Tulane women’s tennis team has three players ranked among the top 20 in singles and two doubles tandems ranked in the top 10 in regional rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

In singles, Junior Klara Vyskocilova is No. 7, freshman Ipek Birol is No. 16 and senior Emma Levy is No. 18. In doubles, Caroline Magnusson and Caroline Thornton rank No. 3, and Levy and Vyskocilova are No. 5.

Loyola Hall of Fame to induct three

NEW ORLEANS — Loyola University New Orleans will induct three new members to the Wolf Pack Hall of Fame at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Danna Student Center.

The 2013 inductees are Peter Finney Sr. (basketball 1948-1949, freshman basketball coach 1949, sports information director 1950-1960); Kelly Fridge (volleyball 2002-2006); and Michael Gulotta (cross country 2000-2004). Erwin Caswell Jr. will also be honored with the St. Sebastian Award for his efforts on behalf of Loyola athletes off the field of play.

QB Eskridge
to join VooDoo

NEW ORLEANS — The Arena Football League assigned quarterback Zack Eskridge to the New Orleans VooDoo, the VooDoo front office said Tuesday.

In 2012, Eskridge (6-foot-4, 215) was part of the now defunct Kansas City Command, where he passed for 668 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Eskridge finished off his college career at Midwestern State as the school’s leader with 6,953 passing yards, 64 touchdown passes, 570 completions, a 65.7 completion percentage and a 152.9 pass efficiency rating .
