Lacassine-based Louisiana Spirits LLC’s soon-to-be-released rum, made from Louisiana sugar cane, will be called Bayou Rum, the company announced Tuesday.
Republic National Distributing Co. will be the rum’s exclusive distributor in Louisiana, according to the announcement. The rum is expected to be available throughout the state by early June.
Louisiana Spirits said it is nearing completion of its distillery. The distillery, warehouse and a visitor center are located along the South Frontage Road of Interstate 10 at Exit 48. The company is initially creating 15 to 20 full-time jobs.
Tests of the name in Louisiana and around the country drew positive reviews, according to Louisiana Spirits President Trey Litel. The distillery will produce two types of Bayou Rum: Silver Bayou Rum and Spiced Bayou Rum.
Silver Bayou Rum is handcrafted in a traditional pot still using 100 percent natural Louisiana cane sugar and molasses, the company said. It described the taste as a smooth and subtle character. Spiced Bayou Rum is also handcrafted in a traditional pot still and then blended with natural Louisiana ingredients to spice up cocktails, it said.
