Third-graders at Gonzales Primary School are taking part in the Cogmed Working Memory Training program thanks to a grant from The Ascension Fund.
Teacher Deidre Kibbie said the grant, sponsored by the All Star Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Dealership, paid for the computer-based program that increases working memory skills.
“Working memory is the ability to keep information in your mind for a short time, focus on a task, and remember what to do next,” she said. “These skills, once improved, will transfer to the students’ ability to comprehend and retain information.”
She said she already has observed that students taking part in the program have improved their working memory performance.
“Once training is completed, we look forward to continuing to track the students’ progress in maintaining the acquired skills,” she said. “We also look forward to the possibility of providing this training to other students in the parish that would benefit.”
