King T.J. Moran and Queen Brenda Berg reigned over the 26th annual Karnival Krewe de Louisiane Ball on Jan. 25 at the Baton Rouge River Center.

With the theme “Let’s Toast to Finding a Cure,” the lobby and ballroom featured large champagne glasses lit in a golden hue with moving bubbles. The black and gold d├ęcor included a black LED curtain the length of the stage with gold champagne glass panels with lights changing colors continuously to purple, green and gold. As guests were seated at their tables, large monitors showed the photo history of the krewe.

The festivities began as board Vice President Lance Lemoine welcomed guests, corporate ball associates and parade Grand Marshal Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne. Last year’s royal couple, King Eric Lane and Queen Laurie Aronson, turned over the reins to 2013 Ball Captain Jacqui Vines, who proclaimed the beginning of the formal tableau.

The queen ascended the stage followed by her king. They waved their gold and Swarovski crystal scepters, which matched their crowns, to greet the guests and signal the procession of dukes and duchesses.

Presented were Dr. Cecilia Cuntz and Tom Olinde, Kelly Hurtado and Robert Schneckenburger, Kathi Gill and Trent Bondy, Elizabeth Murrill and Ragan Richard, and Candy Wright and Layne McDaniel.

Carrying full face masks that coordinated with their gowns, the duchesses curtseyed to their king and queen. The dukes, with half masks of the same color, bowed, and the couples took their places on the stage.

The tableau culminated with the presentation of the krewe’s 2013 debutante coterie with their escorts: Kaitlyn Nicole Anton and her father, George Anton; Arianna Francesca Campesi and her father, Pat Campesi; Ashton Alexandra Lane and her father, Eric Lane; Megan Elizabeth Lewis and her father, Max Lewis; Emily Marie Mitchell and her father, Dr. Horace Mitchell; Grace Anne Mikesell and Hanna Elizabeth Mikesell and their father, Kurt Mikesell; Madeline Claire Olinde and her father, Henry Olinde; Mary Margaret Patterson and her father, Burke Patterson; Olivia Blair Perego and her father, Dr. Alan Perego; Elizabeth Anne Phillips and her father, Gary Phillips; Kaitlynn Elizabeth Spikes and her father, Dale Spikes; and Bailey Adams Walker and her father, Robert Walker.

Highlighting the evening was the unveiling of a check for $160,000, representing the krewe’s yearlong fundraising efforts on behalf of cancer patients in the community. The krewe vice president awarded the check to Todd Stevens and Scott Wester of the Mary Bird Perkins-Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. Also on stage for the ceremony was the Gerry Lane family of Gerry Lane Enterprises, presenting sponsor of the event.

Following the presentation, the court promenaded around the hall with decorated parasols, followed by guests in second line fashion. The grand marshal then signaled the start of the official parade.

The U.S. Coast Guard color guard led the procession, followed by the grand marshal and sheriff’s motorcycles, the Al Azar Grotto Bee Patrol mini cars, the Woodlawn High School Marching Band, the Baker High School Marching Band, the LSU cheerleaders, antique fire engines, the McKinley High School JROTC, puppeteers and unicycles, Clear Channel Radio van, Guaranty Radio van, and other groups.

The debutantes rode in Gerry Lane Enterprises convertibles, and the court rode on Mardi Gras floats, all tossing beads and trinkets to the crowd.

The parade was followed by dancing to the sound of the Tip Tops.
