Chris Towery, who has served as offensive coordinator at The Dunham School for the past two years, is set to become the head football coach at Abbeville High.
Towery said he hopes to finalize plans for the Abbeville job as soon as Friday. It is the third head coaching job for Towery, who was head coach at Cecilia High in 2002 and head coach at Winnfield in 2006.
“I think there’s a tremendous amount of potential for the program at Abbeville,” Towery said. “My wife is from the area and my family is very excited about it, which is important to me.
“I want to thank (Abbeville Principal) Ivy Landry for giving me this opportunity and also Dunham for allowing me to be a coordinator again.
“I’m also humbled to coach in a district with such great coaches. Lewis Cook (Notre Dame) was my position coach in college, and he’s one of the best in the state. Doug Dotson at Erath and I are like brothers ... we coached together at both Redemptorist and Central. Then you have Tommy Byler at North Vermilion and Stephen Lotief at Kaplan are also great coaches.”
The 40-year-old Towery has 15 years of coaching experience, including collegiate stints at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and Houston. He was offensive coordinator at Redemptorist in 2005 when the Wolves won the Class 3A state title.
Towery, a former ULL quarterback who was a backup to NFL player Jake Delhomme, inherits an Abbeville program that was 3-7 last season. Towery helped 2A Dunham finish 5-6, including a berth in the Class 2A playoffs last fall.
Woodlawn High Principal Daniel Edwards said Thursday he is in the process of interviewing candidates for the school’s head football-athletic director position.
Since Don Jones resigned on Nov. 27, Edwards said the school has received between 25 and 30 applications. The Panthers finished 1-9 last fall.
“I’ve decided that we really need to take our time with this and make the best possible choice we can for Woodlawn High School,” Edwards said. “I haven’t set a timetable for when we will hire a coach. We’re not in a hurry.”
