Some players prefer to wait until the final days of the NCAA’s football recruiting period to make a decision on what college to attend.
Catholic High running back Khalil Thomas decided there was no reason to wait. The Class 5A All-State and All-Metro player committed to McNeese State on Tuesday night.
“It was time for me to make a decision,” Thomas said. “I sat down with my parents and we discussed the schools recruiting me.
“When we did, McNeese was the one,” Thomas said. “I really like the school, and I like the direction they’re going in with their offense.”
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Thomas displayed versatility while helping lead the Bears to the Class 5A quarterfinals last fall.
Thomas ran for a team-high 1,467 yards and 14 touchdowns and also had a team-high 22 catches for 365 yards with 5 TDs. He added nearly 400 yards on kick returns with another TD.
Those numbers were enough to net Thomas a spot on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 5A All-State team. He also was the District 5-5A Offensive MVP and was part of The Advocate’s All-Metro team for Class 5A-4A.
Catholic High coach Dale Weiner called Thomas the most complete back the Bears have had in a decade. Thomas helped lead a Catholic team that rebounded from a 3-7 season in 2011 to finish 9-3. The Bears won the District 5-5A title.
“Khalil is one of those guys who works and does things the right way,” Weiner said. “I’m so happy for him. McNeese is getting a terrific player.”
Thomas has already met the NCAA’s academic qualifying standards. The University of Louisiana at Monroe and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette were Thomas’ other finalists. His goal is to earn playing time for the Cowboys next fall.
“I’m going to get to work over the summer and see what I can do,” Thomas said.
TOM SETS VISITS: Weiner said Catholic offensive lineman Cameron Tom is scheduled to make the first of three recruiting visits to Louisiana Tech this weekend.
Tom (6-5, 280) was an All-Metro selection. Weiner said Tom also plans to visit ULL and Southern Mississippi in the weeks ahead.
