1,000 free trees to be given away Saturday

The Department of Parks and Parkways and Hike for KaTREEna will give away 1,000 native Louisiana trees from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday at Joe W. Brown Memorial Park in eastern New Orleans.

The event will include a seminar on tree planting and care provided by Bayou Tree Service.

Urban foresters, landscape architects and horticulturists with the Department of Parks and Parkways will help with tree selection.

The trees are free, but there is a limit of two per household.

Hike for KaTREEna is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to replant over 100,000 trees lost to Hurricane Katrina, and now Hurricane Isaac.

Hike for KaTREEna is a member of the 2013 New Orleans Super Bowl XLVII Host Committee’s Environmental Committee.

The trees have been provided by a grant from the Apache Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Apache Corp.
