North shore Democrats mark ┬áPresident Obama’s inaugural

North shore Democrats will get a jump on President Barack Obama’s second inaugural festivities in Washington, D.C., by staging their own version of an inaugural ball on Friday in Slidell.

The event, sponsored by the St. Tammany Democratic Parish Executive Committee, will be 7 p.m - 10 p.m. at the historic Salmen-Fritchie House, 127 Cleveland Ave.

The same group staged a localized inaugural ball four years ago to coincide roughly with the first inauguration of Obama as president of the United States.

He will take the oath of office for a second four-year term on Jan. 21.

Tickets, which are $35 for a single and $60 for a couple, are now on sale and the evening will include a silent auction, raffle for a gift basket, cash bar cocktails, buffet dinner and dancing to live music.

Organizing committee chairwoman Shannon Cockayne, of Bush, who represents the 6th District on the 19-member party executive committee, said tickets can be purchased online through PayPal at http:northshoredwc.org, the web page for the North shore Democratic Women’s Club.

Those paying by cash or check need to RSVP by email at InauguralBall2013@hotmail.com.

A winner of the raffle, which is a large wine and cheese gift basket donated by Acquistapace’s, of Covington, will be drawn during the evening. Raffle tickets also are on sale now and can be purchased from committee members and others.

Tickets are $2 each or three for $5.

Cockayne said a variety of donated items will be on display in the foyer of the reception hall for the silent auction.

Proceeds from the event will be used by the executive committee to recruit and assist viable Democratic candidates for various elective offices.
