Each week The Advocate asks a different “quiz taker” for his or her current favorites in pop culture.
QUIZ TAKER: Kerry Beary, 41, artist and owner of the Atomic Pop Shop.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: “I don’t use online music services, and I don’t have an iPod. At this very moment, I am listening to The Flaming Lips, ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robot’ on red vinyl and have The Clash, ‘Black Market Clash’ cued up!”
WHAT I’M READING: “I read music trade mags, Atomic Ranch, The New York Times, and I’m finishing up a book titled ‘Vinyl Junkie.’”
WHAT I’M WATCHING: “I don’t watch much television, but when I do it’s usually ‘Law & Order,’ the History Channel or ‘Mad Men.’ The last DVD I watched was Tarrantino’s ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ and I love watching classic movies like ‘Rear Window’ and ‘Vertigo’ on Netflix.”
WHERE I’M SURFING (ON THE INTERNET): “My top five sites are: 1. http://www.RecordStoreDay.com 2. http://www.Etsy.com 3. http://www.TheOnion.com 4. http://www.Pintrest.com 5. Facebook.”
WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?
“My guilty pleasure is definitely my collection of vintage smoking accessories. I quit smoking seven years ago, but I still love my cool ashtrays, cigarette filters, cases and lighters. I go through my collection every so often to sell some of it off ... and then I find something so amazing that I have to have it!”
Your art and store showcase a particular era of design — the mid-century modern era lately seen in “Mad Men.” What attracts you to this era?
“The most attractive aspect of mid-century modern design to me is the form, function and durability of the style. Things were made of quality materials and were made to last. My work reflects that style mainly because the 1950s and ’60s art and furniture have been a part of my surroundings most of my life. Seeing a resurgence of this era of design the last 10 years has been awesome!”
