Lt. Col. Mary Marston McKeon, Air Force ROTC commander at LSU, spoke to the Red Stick Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War on Dec. 4 at Hollywood Casino.
McKeon entered the Air Force after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She assumed her current position in July 2010. She teaches two college courses.
New member Johnnie Mosby was introduced. Mosby was wounded and captured during the Korean War. Recently he received the Purple Heart that he should have received 59 years ago.
Commander Beth Dawson announced that Ed Capron received one of the 2012 Governor’s Outstanding Leadership in Disabilities Awards. He was recognized as the veteran showing exemplary services in helping the disabled.
The meeting ended with Christmas activities. The club will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Hollywood Casino.
The Gardenettes of Ponchatoula held its Christmas meeting and luncheon on Dec. 5 at Cafe Nola in Ponchatoula.
President Dale Rieth led a short meeting before the luncheon. Members present included Cricket Ayala, Margaret Bailey, Kathy Bedenbaugh, Kathy Bruce, District VI Director Diane Dufour, Adrienne Dunn, Vicky Fannaly, Tonya Ferguson, Maria Griener, Sandra Haro, Janice Hickey, Karen Moran, Joan Morse, Louise Steadman, Pat Sweeney, Peggy Avery, Margaret Hardin, Ellen Pusey, Robin Austin and her guest, Anna Poland.
Members brought horticulture specimens to be judged. Bedenbaugh won three blue ribbons, and Avery won a blue ribbon. Members exchanged Christmas ornaments and brought floral exhibits that they had created, which were given to residents at Westminster Hospice in Ponchatoula.
During the holidays, members donated items to Operation We Care to be shipped to troops overseas. The Gardenettes also decorated trees at North Oaks and the Ponchatoula Library.
The Gardenettes is a member of District VI of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation and the Deep South Region of National Garden Clubs.
