Inmate veterans play Santa

Advocate staff photo by JAMES MINTON -- Veterans play SantaDixon Correctional Institute inmate Oscar Wooden, an armed forces veteran who served in Germany, carries two of 50 new bicycles and tricycles donated Thursday by members of DCI's Veterans Incarcerated organization for distribution as Christmas presents to needy children. The bicycles being loaded into the truck at left were destined for homes in the area surrounding the Jackson prison, club sponsor Maj. Joey Harrell said. Steven Amort, a Navy veteran and the organization's commander, said the group spent about $2,500 for the toys. The money is raised through a variety of fundraisers held throughout the year.
