HAMMOND — The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is offering a reward for information on the unsolved death of Hammond businesswoman Mary Alvarez.
Her husband, Vic Alvarez, called 911 around 4:35 p.m. on Nov. 14, saying he had just returned to their shop, Alvarez Nursery on Morrison Boulevard just north of Hammond, to find his wife lying on the floor, unresponsive and bleeding from the head, Sheriff Daniel Edwards said at the time.
Mary Alvarez, 63, was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.
An autopsy performed the following day confirmed the cause of death to be a single gunshot wound to the head, Edwards said.
Authorities said at the time that Alvarez’s death did not appear to be a random act of violence nor could law enforcement determine whether her death was the result of a criminal act.
After a monthlong investigation, details surrounding Alvarez’s death remain unclear, Edwards said in a news release Wednesday.
Edwards said a $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the discovery of the events preceding Alvarez’s death. Anyone having information regarding the case is asked to call sheriff’s Detective Dale Athmann at (985) 634-9181, Edwards said.
In addition, Crime Stoppers has increased its cash reward offer in the case to $2,500, Edwards said.
All tips made to Crime Stoppers remain anonymous. The organization can be reached at (800) 554-5245.
