A Christmas Carol at Southern Rep
John “Spud” McConnell stars as Ebenezer Scrooge in the Dickens classic embellished with music, dance, clowns and visual effects. R+L Carriers Bowl Friday Night Concert
The Beach Boys and Bad Company with lead singer Brian Howe kick off the University of Louisiana at Lafayette-East Carolina bowl weekend with a free concert at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Champion’s Square.
Family fun day at the Fair Grounds
Kids can visit with live reindeer and pose for photos with Santa Claus. Mom and Dad can try to add to the Christmas fund as fillies and mares 3 and older compete in the highlight Blushing K.D. stakes on the turf, one of three stakes on Saturday’s card worth $75,000. Plus cookie decorating, face painting and ornament making. Admission to the track is $5; children 12 and under are free. Saturday at the Fair Grounds, noon to 4 p.m.
Christmas Eve Bonfires in St. James Parish
Residents of Lutcher, Gramercy, Paulina and surrounding areas continue a generations-old Christmas Eve tradition and light bonfires atop the levee along the Mississippi River. Fires will be lit at 7 p.m.; arrive early to find parking in a lot along La. 641 and stroll the levee to see structures up to 20 feet tall.
