The indefinite suspension of LSU point guard Anthony Hickey appears to be nearing a close.
Coach Johnny Jones said Wednesday that Hickey would likely rejoin the Tigers when they leave town Thursday to play back-to-back road games against Boise State and UC Irvine.
Hickey was suspended from the team Friday for what Jones said was a violation of athletic department and university policies. He did not play in Tuesday night’s 80-67 victory over Chattanooga.
As he met with the media Wednesday to discuss the upcoming road trip, Jones said Hickey was in a meeting with officials from the athletic department. Jones said he personally met with Hickey earlier in the day.
“He’s in a meeting right now. If things work out there and if everything goes according to plan, he will travel with us possibly this weekend,” Jones said. “Whether or not he plays kind of depends on (the outcome of) the meeting, but he will be traveling with us. I’m just waiting to hear back from the people he’s meeting with right now.”
LSU (6-0) looks to keep alive its strongest start since the 2008-09 season, the year of the program’s last NCAA tournament berth, when the Tigers face Boise State on Friday night in Boise, Idaho. The team will not return home before traveling to play UC Irvine on Tuesday, the second of three straight pre-Christmas road games.
Hickey averages 10.2 points and is shooting 35.7 percent from 3-point range.
At the time of his suspension, he ranked first in the Southeastern Conference with 4.4 steals per game and second in the league with 5.2 assists.
Jones had twice disciplined Hickey before last week’s setback, first suspending him for an exhibition against Arkansas-Monticello and later starting him on the bench for a game against Mississippi Valley State.
Jones said junior Andre Stringer would again start at point guard Friday.
Stringer shined in his first start of the season Tuesday, scoring 18 points to go with four assists and three steals. He scored five of the game’s first seven points.
Backup point guard Corban Collins, a freshman, chipped in 11 points and three assists.
