Home accessories store to open

Studio C, a locally owned furniture and home accessories store, will open this spring in the former Brandt’s Maisonette location on Government Street.

Greg Vernice said he and co-owner Damien Boisvert will open in the 1,200-square-foot former restaurant at Steele Boulevard by March or April.

Vernice describes the store as “a design studio meets a general store” with “a relaxed, contemporary, laid-back aesthetic.”

Studio C will sell furniture, lighting, accessories, artwork, books and other items, bringing another locally owned shop to Government.

“I kinda grew up in this neighborhood and I really believe in it and support it,” Vernice explained.

“And it’s a 3-minute walk to work,” he added.

Recent years have seen the arrival of Denicola’s, The Atomic Pop Shop and Time Warp joining Government Street stalwarts, including Honeymoon Bungalow, Aladdin’s Lamp Antiques, Victoria’s Toy Station and Caffery Gallery.

Vernice said he sees Government Street developing little clusters of shops that complement one another.

Vernice and Boisvert had a home furnishings store and did design work in New York, then spent some time in Costa Rica before coming back to Baton Rouge about a year ago.

They have had items available in a kiosk at The Foyer on Acadian Thruway and Perkins Road since February, though Studio C will be their first dedicated storefront, Vernice said.

Mark Hebert, who marketed the property for Kurz & Hebert Commercial Real Estate, said the building’s days as a restaurant were behind it because an agreement that provided the building with a few extra parking spaces ended years ago.

Retail, he said, is the property’s “highest and best use.”
