The number of books in a child’s home is one of the greatest predictors of a child’s academic success.
That’s why we applaud the efforts of the Kiwanis Club of Baton Rouge to get more books into the homes of local youngsters.
Through the organization’s “3 Rs for 3BR” program, the club provides new and used children’s books to public locations throughout Baton Rouge where adults and their young children from infants to 5-year-olds are likely to spend time. Sites currently include health clinics and pre-K programs.
At selected sites, on donated bookshelves, Kiwanis volunteers place books that can be selected and read to young children. Once the adult caregiver or parent is finished reading one of the books to the child, the book is then signed over to the child for permanent use at home.
Local residents can help this effort by donating used children’s books, new books, or money for new books. Residents can also offer a site for the program, or host a book drive. For more information on how to get involved, contact Noel Hammatt at (225) 938-3832 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
