The Zachary Chamber of Commerce and city officials are rolling the annual parade and Christmas open house into one huge event this year, beginning with the parade’s start at 3:45 p.m. Saturday.
The theme of the Main Street parade is “Families Famous in Fact and Fiction,” and it will be followed by the open house and Christmas tree lighting program in the area of City Hall. About 20 businesses and churches will offer complimentary items from booths set up in the parking lot, while a variety of free refreshments will be served by city departments.
The holiday movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” will be shown on the lawn of the Bowman House and the historic homes will be open for guided tours. Eat some pastalaya and cake at the Police Department and enjoy holiday arts and entertainment at the pavilion.
Santa Claus will make his annual appearance at the fire station, where jambalaya also will be served.
Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site in St. Francisville has its 10th annual “Christmas at Rosedown” program Saturday and Sunday with the main house decorated in 19th century style. The staff will relate the stories of Christmas traditions passed down through the Turnbull and Bowman families.
The traditional Rosedown Christmas dinner will be prepared Saturday through the down-hearth cooking method, using period recipes and equipment.
On both days, costumed presenters from around the area will be displaying various 19th-century crafts demonstrations and activities. Also featured will be musicians and carolers, hayrides, a marshmallow roast and photos with Father Christmas.
The Baker Fire Department will be parading Santa Claus on a fire truck through the city Tuesday through Saturday of next week and sharing candy with good little boys and girls.
Santa will visit all streets west of La. 19 and south of Lavey Lane on Tuesday and all streets north of Groom Road between La. 19 and Plank Road on Wednesday.
On Dec. 20, he’ll cover all streets between Groom Road and Lavey Lane, from La. 19 to Sunshine Drive; on Dec. 21, look for him on streets between Groom Road and Lavey Lane from Seville Drive to Plank Road; and Dec. 22 will be a makeup day in case of rain earlier in the week.
The Lane Regional Medical Center Auxiliary will host the popular Masquerade $5 jewelry and accessories sale Thursday and Friday in the staff development classroom. The sale runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted, and the proceeds go to auxiliary projects and scholarships.
The West Feliciana Animal Humane Society will be in Parker Park in St. Francisville from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, offering pets for adoption.
The West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office’s annual “Kid’s Christmas” will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the West Feliciana Middle School Gym. Santa arrives by helicopter at 11:30 a.m., and hot dogs and jambalaya will be served at noon.
