Teachers union leaders from the metro New Orleans area were among six who received Union Values in Action awards recently at the Louisiana Federation of Teachers 48th annual convention in Baton Rouge.

Jefferson Federation President Meladie Munch received an award in recognition of her work to stop the School Board’s actions, including furloughing teachers and school employees.

United Teachers of New Orleans President Larry Carter also received an award. Carter worked with state Rep. James Armes on a bill to double the penalty for charter schools that punish whistle-blowers.

Although the bill was killed in the House Education Committee, Carter and LFT Legislative Director Mary-Patricia Wray said they would bring the issue back in future legislative sessions.
