Man arrested for attempted murder

Baton Rouge police arrested Tommy Lerord Baker Saturday morning after he fired a shotgun three times at a man Baker said he considered a threat to his family, an affidavit of probable cause says.

Police booked Baker, 29, 1115 N. 35th St., Baton Rouge, into Parish Prison on one count each of attempted second-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm.

Baker told police that earlier in the evening, he broke up a fight between his wife and two others outside a night club. When the couple arrived home, they discovered a man had followed them, Baker told police. The man told Baker “he was going to shut them down and handle them,” the affidavit says.

Baker grabbed a Browning 12-gauge shotgun from under a mattress where his children slept, ran outside and fired about three shots at the victim, striking him in the back, the affidavit says.

Baker told police he “messed up,” but he was protecting his family, the affidavit says.

The victim was taken to a hospital and treated for his injuries.
